Judy Slater

Profile

Welcome to the 'Cool but Classy' sound of Judy Slater. Judy was born in the Caribbean, educated in Canada, Scotland and London. She trained in Classical ballet, has competed at international level as a sprinter, holds several records and is a former Scotland 100 metres champion. She has a passion for languages and is a graduate of Glasgow University, studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and the Royal College of Music in London.

Judy has won many scholarships, prizes and prestigious awards. She is a versatile performer and has had a varied career from plays, music theatre, dance and opera to concerts: classical, jazz, Latin American and Gospel music on concert platform, stage, television and radio throughout the world.

Judy’s versatility, energy, creativity and passion has given her freedom to move genres effortlessly. Her roles range from the title role in Carmen through Mary Magdalene and Snow Queen to Mowgli in the Urban Jungle Book. She has worked with companies and in venues as varied as Rambert Dance Company (where she was solo guest artist over a period of three years and opened the new Sadlers Wells Theatre), through English National Opera’s Contemporary Opera Studio, the Royal Opera House Linbury Studio, Dunblane Cathedral, St. Lucia’s Cultural Centre to the Queen Elizabeth Hall and London’s West End.

Judy has had sell-out solo concerts around the world with her exciting, entertaining and dramatic programmes. She is as comfortable in a solo classical concert as she is performing with the London Festival Orchestra or as lead singer in the Latin American band Riamba. Judy has hung upside down, balanced on breeze blocks and set them on fire at the foot of the spire of Salisbury Cathedral (Salisbury Festival); she has danced in a shell-covered floor-length wig and rolled down a seven foot raked stage with Opera Factory; she has back-flipped and rollerbladed her way around the stage for the Unicorn Theatre for Children; she has played cheeky, chirpy chappies and sexy, sultry, strong women in operas up and down the UK; she has performed in French, English, Spanish, German, Russian, Czech, Italian, Anglo Saxon and Ancient Greek; her characters have been killed over and over again and have even been raised from the dead with the London Handel Orchestra in London and at the Handel Festival in Germany!

Judy has been involved in contemporary work (singing, acting and dance) and community projects. She has a heart to share the love of Christ through music and the arts. Judy has taken  music of a professional standard into the community (hospices, hospitals, prisons, special needs schools, nursing homes etc.) to those who are not able to attend churches, theatres or concert halls.

Judy is a worship leader and actively involved in prayer and worship in the local church. None of her achievements or successes mean anything compared with the love Father God has shown her through the Lord Jesus Christ. Anything good in her comes from Him; all her gifts are from God and are for His glory. Judy will sing unto the Lord as long as she lives!

Judy’s ‘Cool but Classy’ sound has delighted audiences around the world and she is now recording both live and in the studio with her accompanist/composer husband, Gavin Cuthbertson. They are currently in Spain working for the King.
